“Deer Hunting – The Most Popular Hunting Season in Oklahoma

There is something here for every deer hunter. Whether you want to see lots of deer or you have your sights set on a wall hanger- we have it all! This diverse assembly of deer hunters is blessed with equally diverse habitats in which to pursue their sport.

And if you do not have access to private land, no worries as dozens of Wildlife Management Areas are scattered across the state offering some fantastic whitetail hunting!”

I”n Oklahoma, the largest free-ranging elk herds can be found in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, as well as at Pushmataha, Cookson Hills, Spavinaw, and Cherokee wildlife management areas. Small herds also inhabit private land in Kiowa, Comanche, and Caddo counties.”

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation makes the following comments about Turkey hunting during hunting season.

“These turkeys are no longer confined to river systems since roost sites are now available in three rows, shelterbelts, and upland timber, which was not available before man settled the Oklahoma prairie.

This has dispersed populations of birds across the western three-fourths of the state and made them more accessible to sportsmen. Turkey hunters have a legitimate chance to bag a spring tom on many of the Department’s lands open to public hunting.”

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation makes the following comments about Game Bird hunting during hunting season.

“Although not the first state to jump into mind when thinking of waterfowl, Oklahoma has been blessed with many diverse opportunities for waterfowlers. Located at the southern portion of the Central Flyway, Oklahoma is part of the wintering range for many species of ducks and geese.

This provides sportsmen an opportunity to pursue their feathered quarry from November through January. Whether it is hunting teal and other puddle ducks on small waters early season, hunting mallards on a river in the coldest parts of winter, going after divers on large reservoirs, or pursuing geese in a grain field, Oklahoma provides an opportunity for you.”

“In the late 1900s, however, black bears began making a comeback in Oklahoma after the successful reintroduction of black bears in the Ouachita and Ozark Mountains of Arkansas.

That initial relocation of about 250 bears from northern Minnesota and Manitoba, Canada, turned into thousands of bears in the mountains of Arkansas, which then expanded into southwest Missouri and eastern Oklahoma.”
